The Second City's 50th in Ridgefield

Connecticut will get a taste of high-brow humor this weekend when Chicago-based sketch comedy troupe The Second City performs Friday at the Ridgefield Playhouse. The group is touring in support of their 50th Anniversary, and the show will feature a mix of fresh improv and material written over the years by their esteemed alumni, including John Belushi, Tina Fey, Stephen Colbert, and Bill Murray. Current cast member Kate Duffy will be performing in "Wicked," a sketch penned by Fey and fellow SNL-er Rachel Dratch that features a barrage of arguments between a Boston-bred mother and daughter. The sketch is just one example of The Second City's impact: the routine eventually morphed into popular SNL bit "Sully and Denise" starring Dratch and her Red Sox-obsessed boyfriend played by Jimmy Fallon. The entire evening should be a bit of a comedy history lesson, as The Second City has been lampooning world leaders, celebrities, and mocking various scandals on a weekly basis throughout the past half-century. Another selling point: you don't have to worry about paying for drinks, because Benziger Family Winery is hosting a tasting at 7 p.m. Purchase tickets for $50 here. 8 p.m.
