Cleanup Continues After Tornado Touched Down in North Haven

Home surveillance video on Governor’s Drive captured the powerful winds from Wednesday’s tornado in North Haven taking down tall trees in its path.

Many residents in the Montowese neighborhood say they are lucky the tornado did not directly hit their homes.

"Could have been a lot worse," Gregory Aurora, the owner of Aurora Tree and Landscape, said. "This came through everybody’s backyard over hear and went straight up past Middletown Avenue."

Starting before 8 a.m. Thursday, Aurora and his crew spent this hot and humid day removing the trees that crushed a shed in a backyard on Peter’s lane.

"We started out full of energy," Aurora said. "But we’re running out right now, but we got a couple more hours to go."

Johna Iwanec and her son were home when the tornado went on a more than two mile tear east from I-91 toward Route 22.

"I actually ran out to the kitchen and he ran from the living room and we both met in the kitchen and we’re like oh my god we think it’s a tornado," she said.

The National Weather Service confirmed an EF0 tornado touched down after NBC Connecticut shared this viewer video.

Remarkably, nobody was injured, police said, but the cleanup is far from over.

"We’re all very grateful," Iwanec said.

Wednesday’s tornado is the first in Connecticut since one more than two years ago in Wolcott.
