Higher Education, Higher Price

College students, get ready to pay more for your classes.

The chancellor of the Connecticut State University system is proposing that the state Board of Governors for Higher Education waive a state-mandated cap on tuition increases.

The tuition increases would impact the four universities that make up the CSU system: Central, Western, Southern and Eastern Connecticut State universities.

David Carter suggests the board consider waiving its 15 percent ceiling on increases next year if state budget cuts of 10 percent or more are imposed.

Tuition could go up more than 34 percent next year to make up for such a cut.

The announcement comes a month after the state Department of Education said more students have enrolled at the state’s public colleges and universities than in the previous two decades.

“Clearly, we’re experiencing great demand for college,” Michael Meotti, commissioner of higher education, said at the time. “As in past tough economic times, people are turning to college to improve their prospects.”

If tuition goes up, those prospects might be 34 percent less bright than they are right now.

We crunched the numbers. What the hike would mean for Connecticut residents at the schools if tuition, but not fees, increased 34 percent:
