Fence at War Memorial Damaged

A driver jumped a curb, struck and damaged the fence that surrounds the Iwo Jima Memorial on the New Britain / Newington town line.

Gary Roy of the Iwo Jima Memorial Historical Foundation said the incident happened sometime around 1:00am on Saturday morning.

Roy says a driver jumped a curb and smashed into the fence and then left the scene. He says a police officer on patrol noticed a car with sparks coming from underneath it and pulled the driver over.

The investigation revealed that driver was responsible for striking the fence.

Roy says he's hopeful the driver's insurance will pay for the damage. He says it costs $1,500 per month to maintain the park - and its only funding comes from donations. He adds the cost to repair the fence would be too much for the group to bear.
