Fire Ruins Thanksgiving Plans

A house fire ruined Thanksgiving plans for one family on Edgehill Road in Wallingford.

The house was supposed to be full of people about to sit down for Thanksgiving dinner. Instead it was being boarded up after a fire destroyed the garage and spread to the dining room.

The home was owned by David Drumheller.

"My wife heard a muffled explosion.  We looked outside and saw a glow. We went out to look and the garage was in flames," Drumheller said.

Moments before the boom Drumheller and his wife were getting ready for a Thanksgiving meal for 13 guests.  When the Drumhellers realized their garage had caught fire, the couple dropped everything and ran outside.

"Thankfully, it happened before dinner. No one was here for dinner," said David Drumheller Jr., also of Wallingford.  He said everyone was fine. There were no injuries.

The younger Drumheller lives 3 miles away.  He was among those expected for the Thanksgiving dinner later in the day.

"We were having Thanksgiving here in a couple of hours and the dining room table was next to the garage where the explosion happened," explained Drumheller Jr.

The homeowners also lost two luxury cars parked in their garage - a 2001 Jaguar and a 2002 Infiniti.

As neighbors stopped by with cookies and comforting words, the family said they have plenty to be grateful for.

"Thank god everything worked out. We just have to deal with a house at this point and our cars," Drumheller said expressing gratitude that no one was hurt by the fire.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation by the Wallingford Fire Department.
