Girl Killed as Car Rolls Into Tree

Maggie O'Connor climbed into vacant SUV, police said.

An 8-year-old Brookfield girl was killed on Wednesday when the car she was in rolled into a tree.

Margaret O’Connor got into a parked SUV on Windwood Road and it rolled down a hill, about 150 feet, and struck a tree, police said.

Somehow the parking brake was released or the car was put into gear, the Associated Press reports.

Margaret, who was called Maggie, was the only person in the car, police said. She was partially ejected and died at the scene.

Police were called at 4:15 p.m. and remained at the scene until 8:30 p.m.

Grief counselors will be at Huckleberry Hill Elementary School from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday and Friday for any of Maggie’s friends and classmates, as well as staff, parents and members of the community who are in need of counseling.

No charges have been filed. Police said the girl's mother was home at the time of the accident.
