Longtime New Haven Politician Dead at 82

Leon Medvedow died Monday night at the age of 82.

Longtime New Haven politician Leon Medvedow died Monday night at the age of 82, officials from Milford Hospital said on Tuesday.

Medvedow’s health was ailing in recent years and he died from a heart attack, according to the New Haven Register

Medvedow was a close advisor and friend to Mayor John DeStefano and had served as chairman of four of his election campaigns.

Medvedow was an alderman, representing Westville, according to the New Haven Independent,  
then served as city clerk and Democratic Town Committee.

According to the Register, Medvedow grabbed headlines in 1999, when, five days shy of his 70th birthday, he celebrated his bar mitzvah.

It’s something Medvedow missed a young man.

State and local leaders are now coming forward with stories about their friendships and encounters with Medvedow.

Services will be held at noon on Wednesday at the Shure Funeral Home in New Haven
