Teen Accused of Stealing Metal, Twice in 1 Day

Police charged Robert Authelet at 5:30 a.m., then again at 7 p.m.

Plainfield police arrested an 18-year-old man twice in the same day and said he is suspected of stealing his neighbor’s gutters and downspouts to sell as scrap metal and then taking copper pipes from a vacant house.

A woman called police at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday after seeing two teens on North Main Street in the Moosup section of Plainfield carrying several pieces of scrap metal, looking into driveways and walking around houses, police said.

Police said they found Robert Authelet walking through his neighbor’s house, carrying rain gutters and downspouts.

The other teen ran away when he saw police, police said.

Authelet was charged with larceny and criminal mischief and released on $500 non-surety bond.

Then, at 7:01 p.m., police received a call reporting two males leaving a vacant house on Main Street in Moosup and found Authelet and a 17-year-old nearby, police said.

Authelet is accused of taking copper from the house while the other teen waited outside.

Authelet was charged with burglary in the third degree, criminal mischief in the third degree and larceny in the sixth degree. 

He is due in court next month.

The teen, whose name has not been released because of his age, has been charged with conspiracy to commit burglary in the third degree, conspiracy to commit criminal mischief in the third degree and larceny in the sixth degree.
