Mr. Koh Goes to Washington

The Senate approved former Yale Law School Dean Harold Koh as legal eagle for State Department

Former Yale Law School Dean Harold Koh is going to be offering his sage legal advice to Yale Law grad Hillary Rodham Clinton. Which will, in turn, get to the most powerful man in the world. The Senate Thursday confirmed him as legal adviser of the U.S. Department of State.

The vote was 62-35. Both Connecticut senators, Sen. Chris Dodd and Sen. Joe Lieberman, as you might have imagined, approved the local guy.

So now, Koh joins the department run by Yale Law grad Hillary Rodham Clinton.

"I feel like I am setting sail on a thrilling new adventure," Koh wrote in an e-mail message to others smart enough to be part of Law School community, the Yale Daily News reports.

The vote came after three heated months of politically charged debate.

Most of the anti-Koh sentiment was over comments he allegedly made at a 2007 Yale alumni dinner that, according to Yale Daily News, indicating he supported using of Shariah law in U.S. courts.

Several people who were at the event said Koh never made the comments.

When President Barack Obama nominated Koh, he called him one of the country's leading experts on public and private international law, national security law and human rights.

Earlier this week, Yale said Robert Post will replace Koh as dean on July 1.

Post joined the Yale Law School faculty in 2003 as a law professor, specializing in constitutional law, including the First Amendment, equal protection, and legal history.
