Police Standoff Ends in Enfield

Police said a Department of Correction worker killed himself inside a Circle Drive home.

An armed standoff in Enfield ended with a state Department of Correction worker dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police.

The SWAT Team responded to Circle Drive near Shaker Road, before 6 p.m. after a man with a rifle who barricaded himself in his house, police said.

The event stemmed from a traffic incident in Somers, according to police.

Denis Boucher, 54, of Enfield, left the scene after rear-ending a car while the driver was trying to turn into her driveway in Somers, police said, and went to his Enfield home.

Police said Boucher's wife described him as intoxicated and angry.

"She saw him reach for the rifle. She watched him take the rifle -- began to load it. At that point, she fled the home," Enfield Police Chief Carl Sferrazza said.

Sferrazza said Boucher is an officer for the state Department of Correction.

As the incident was going on, residents in the area received reverse 911 calls telling them to go to their basements.

A large cloud of smoke could be seen coming from the area of the standoff, according to NBC Connecticut's Jeff Stoecker.

Police said it was a tactical tool used to force anyone inside the home out of the building.

Just before 9 p.m., members of the SWAT Team entered the home behind a robotic camera and found Boucher dead with what they said appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
