Skiers Brave Extreme Cold at Mount Southington

The thermometer in the shade next to the chairlift at Mount Southington read just below 10 degrees after noon, but the sun was shining and the wind wasn't quite as fearsome as the day before.

"Yesterday was really rough," said Billy Short, who teaches snowboarding at the slope. "But today the wind's not nearly what it was, even though the temperature's lower."

Most skiers and snowboarders knew how to prepare themselves for an afternoon on the slope.

"You've got to just bundle up," said Christopher Poulos. "I've got about three layers on right now. I've got hand warmers in my gloves."

One woman said her hands were cold and she would be taking breaks to warm up. Inside the cafeteria, many families were doing just that.

"We've made them come in every hour," said Kiersten Naumann, who had four children in her group. "We've got them completely covered up. It seems to be fine. They're warmer than we are and they're outside."
