Trooper Hurt in Wrong-Way I-95 Crash

Police said a Shelton man hit two cruisers and another car.

A Shelton man and a state trooper are hospitalized after what state police said was a wrong-way crash on Interstate 95 Northbound in Bridgeport.

Troopers were at the scene of a prior crash between exits 27 and 28 in Bridgeport just before 11:30 p.m. on Thursday when a 63-year-old Shelton man got on the highway in the wrong direction at exit 28, state police said.

Police identified the driver as John Mysllwiec and said he struck one cruiser head-on, continued south in the northbound lanes and hit the other trooper's cruiser, causing the cruiser to rotate 180 degrees and hit another car.

Mysllwiec's car crossed the highway, struck another car, hit a barrier and caught on fire, state police said.

Officers extricated Mysllwiec, who they said was partially conscious, and dragged him to safety. He was brought to Saint Vincent's Hospital to be treated for broken ribs and a head injury.

Gary Lebeau, a state trooper, was taken to Saint Vincent's Hospital to be treated for head injuries and injuries to his left arm, state police said.

The case is under investigation.
