Twain Coins Pass Muster in D.C.

House approves commemorative coins honoring famed author.

Mark Twain was always one to coin a phrase. Now, his legacy will live on for decades in coin.

The House of Representatives passed the Mark Twain Commemorative Coin Act, which  Congressman John Larson (D-1st District) cosponsored.

The surcharges associated with the Twain coins will benefit four nonprofit organizations that preserve the work and legacy of Mark Twain, including the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford.

“Mark Twain is one of our nation’s greatest scribes whose work has withstood the test of time and continues to remind Americans of where we have come as a people,” Larson said in a statement. “These coins will help a new generation of Americans learn about Twain’s contributions to Connecticut and our country by providing support for the institutions that work every day to honor his legacy.”

The bill now goes to the U.S. Senate for consideration.

If signed into law, the coins would be released into circulation in 2016.
