Authorities are investigating the weekend death of an inmate at Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown.
A spokeswoman for the state prisons system said 31-year-old Jallen Jones, an inmate at the Garner Correctional Institution in Newtown, was being transferred to the facility's mental health unit just after 11 a.m. Sunday when he became “non-compliant and combative with staff” and then became non-responsive.
Life-saving measures were performed at the scene before Jones was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:25 p.m.
Department of Correction Commissioner Scott Semple said in a statement there were “no immediate indications suggesting that excessive force was utilized.”
Jones, who was from Atlanta, had been in prison since September 2014 and was serving a 10-year sentence for an armed robbery conviction.
The chief state's attorney is investigating. An autopsy is scheduled.
