Bridgeport Man Arrested After Wild Run-In in Monroe

Vincent A Deramo

A 33-year-old Bridgeport man’s mug shot shows him scraped up and in a hospital gown after a wild incident that started in Monroe and continued into Trumbull on Tuesday night.

It started with a suspicious vehicle in front of closed stores in a parking lot on Main Street in Monroe.

As an officer was investigating, police received a 911 call from an employee at the Smithy Restaurant, also on Main Street, police said. The employee said someone was breaking into vehicles in the back parking lot of the restaurant.

There, police saw Vincent Deramo crossing the parking lot with items they police had been taken from the cars and confronted him.

As police tried to take Deramo into custody, he became combative, struggled and broke free, injuring the cop as he fled in a Ford pickup, police said.

Deramo also narrowly missed hitting a Smithy Restaurant employee, according to the police report.

Deramo also tried to ram a police car, sped off, police said, and crashed on Main Street in Trumbull, near St. Stephen’s Church after hitting a utility pole and careening through the roadside brush and trees.

As Monroe police took Deramo into custody, he continued to fight, police said.

While police had Deramo in custody, they did not know his name until learning it through fingerprints.

Deramo has an extensive police record including attempted murder, assault, threatening, multiple charges of burglary, larceny, robbery and disorderly conduct, according to police.

Monroe police said he was previously arrested for sale of a controlled substance and other drug-related charges.

The Monroe officer was treated for his injuries and released and Deramo was taken to St. Vincent’s Medical Center for evaluation and treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.

He was charged with two counts of assault on a peace officer, engaging police in pursuit, three counts of third-degree burglary, two counts of interfering with officer, possession of burglary tools, first-degree larceny, three counts of sixth-degree larceny, first-degree criminal attempt at assault, first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment and three counts of fourth-degree criminal mischief.

Deramo’s bond was set at $500,000, which he was unable to post. He will be arraigned in Bridgeport on June 24.
