Brother Accused of Killing Brother

Hartford police respond to domestic and find man shot and killed

A Hartford man is dead and police arrested his brother, who was trying to escape through a second-floor window.

Police went to Cowles Street in the city’s South End just before 10:30 p.m. Wednesday when they got a report of a domestic situation.

When there was no response from the second-floor apartment, police became concerned because they could hear noise from inside and smelled gas.

Police then saw Brian Smith, 25, jump from the second-floor apartment and run, police said. They soon apprehended him.

Firefighters went into the apartment and found a man with a gunshot wound to the head, police said. The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m.

Smith was charged with murder, assault and interfering with police. A $1.5 million bond was ordered. Police are trying to determine what led to the violent argument that could have accelerated to the shooting.

Neighbors said they are shocked. This is a nice section in the South End of Hartford and police activity is rare, they said.
