Fire Damages Middlesex Pool and Tennis Club in Middletown

The club was not open this year.

The clubhouse building at the Middlesex Pool and Tennis Club in Middletown was damaged in a fire Wednesday night.

Smoke and flames could be seen coming from the abandoned building on Laurel Grove Road Wednesday night.

“My guys got here just a little bit, within five minutes and heavy, heavy fire showing. Right now it’s under investigation,” said Middletown Fire Chief Robert Kronenberger.

No one was hurt.

Kronenberger said the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection was called to the scene as a precaution, but there don't seem to be any significant environmental issues.

Charlotte and Anna Salo-Markowski were among the neighbors stunned by the unfolding scene.

“When we came out there were flames shooting out of the roof. And we could see the top part of the roof had collapsed and the firefighters were fighting it," Anna said.

“I was just scared that people were in there," Charlotte said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
