Crews Extinguish Intense Fire at Norwich Home

NBC Universal, Inc.

Firefighters put out a blaze on Norwich Avenue in the Taftville section of Norwich Wednesday night.

A mayday was called for a firefighter who was trapped inside the home. Officials said the firefighter was safely taken out of the home and is expected to be OK.

No other injuries were reported. Fire officials said the blaze extended through the roof and the building will be condemned.

A neighbor told NBC Connecticut that the fire appeared to spread within minutes.

"My girlfriend came over at about seven o’clock and told me the neighbor’s house was on fire. She was screaming and yelling. And I told her not to panic. And when I went outside, the fire started coming through the windows and the fire trucks were pulling up," said Wayne Chabot, of Norwich.

A report from the Norwich Fire Department said the Taftville and Norwich Fire departments were dispatched at 10:05 p.m.

At 10:26 p.m., a Norwich firefighter called a mayday from the second floor.  The Mohegan Tribal FAST team responded and the firefighter got to a window and was able to alert exterior crews.

Companies from all departments assisted in helping the firefighter out of the building.

Paramedics evaluated the firefighter who was  rescued and he returned to duty.

The fire was under control at 10:19 p.m.

Two people were displaced and the  Norwich fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
