Deteriorated Explosives Detonated at Groton Sub Base

Parts of the Naval Submarine Base New London were evacuated on Thursday after the discovery of deteriorated explosives in a bunker at the Groton base.

About 3-pounds of explosives were discovered during a routine inspection of the bunker in the bases weapons compound around 11 a.m., according to the Navy.

The explosives are used for military dog training.

A recreation area on the base, a golf course on the base, and the Thames View Marina were evacuated, the Navy said.

An explosive ordinance disposal team was brought in from Rhode Island to execute a controlled detonation of the explosives, according to the Navy.  The team brought the explosives and successfully detonated them in a secluded forest area on the base.

The base returned to normal operations around 3:30 p.m.
