One person is dead following a reported explosion and fire at a home in Pomfret.
Emergency workers responded to 421 Brooklyn Road at 1:30 a.m. on Saturday to find billowing smoke and flames, state police said.
Neighbors reported hearing an explosion and seeing a fireball shoot out of the house, according to fire officials. The single-family home was decimated.
Firefighters and a state police K-9 searched the home and found one person dead at the scene, according to police.
State police said the office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the victim's cause of death.
That person has not been identified, but Assistant Fire Chief Brett Sheldon said a senior citizen lives alone in the house.
Sheldon said typically an explosion of this sort would be gas-related, but there's no gas on the property.

The Pomfret Fire Marshal and State Police Fire and Explosion Unit are working to figure out the cause of the fire. Sheldon said the investigation could last a few days.
The home is in a remote area and tanker trucks from several towns were brought in to transport water to fight the fire.
