A Portland house suffered extensive damage during a fire on Thursday night.
Firefighters said they could not immediately attempt to fight the fire from the inside because a downed power line had burned away from the building, but the fire was under control in about 20 minutes.
The Portland fire department responded to a structure fire at 271 Marlborough St. around 8 p.m. and found a fully involved bedroom fire on the second floor that extended into the roof.
Officials said the power line had dropped from the building because the fire extended from the windows.
Connecticut Light & Power crews removed the power line and firefighters were able to fight the fire from inside.
No one was home when the fire started.
Portland Fire Marshal Raymond Sajdak said the fire was most likely caused by an electrical malfunction within the second floor bedroom.
A family of three was displaced by the fire and the Red Cross is assisting with temporary housing
The Middletown and Glastonbury fire departments assisted fighting the fire and the East Hampton Fire Department covered Portland Fire Department Station #2.
