An apartment complex on Spring Street in Hartford was evacuated Tuesday night over a lack of working fire escapes.
According to a Hartford city official, the buildings at 87-101 Spring Street were deemed unsafe and residents were required to leave. Tenants said the city building inspector and fire department ushered them out.
A man who lives in the complex said the fire escapes were torn down several months ago and were never fully rebuilt. He said the residents will be staying in hotels tonight.
No one answered the phone Tuesday night when NBC Connecticut called a number listed for the complex.
