Huskies Ready to go Bowling

UConn looks to put an end to an emotional season with a win in Saturday's PapaJohns.com Bowl

The UConn Huskies look to cap off a rollercoaster of a season with a win in the PapaJohns.com Bowl Saturday at 2 p.m. against South Carolina.

This will be the third bowl game in the past three years for UConn.

Both teams come in with a 7-5 record but feel vastly different about it. South Carolina lost four of its last six contests, while UConn won its final three to get into the game.

UConn’s emotional season has been well documented because of the death of cornerback Jasper Howard after the homecoming game against Louisville in October. Their five losses have been by a total of 15 points, but the loss of their star was almost too much to overcome.

It took a few games after the death to right the ship, but when they did, boy were they good. The Notre Dame overtime thriller was a defining win for the program and the last second win against South Florida was the perfect way for the Huskies to end the regular season.

This game on Saturday provides a very competitive team in the Gamecocks -- a team that was ranked in the top 25 at one point and was competitive in the SEC, the best football conference in the country. A win this weekend would mark the first for the Huskies over an SEC foe.

The Huskies come into the game as the underdogs but that is a role they seem to thrive in. Just when no one gives them a chance, they rise up and beat all expectations. This truly is the first game of next season.

This is a chance for the Huskies to make a statement that they are ready to become a major player in Big East football.

This is an opportunity for UConn coach Randy Edsall to show hopeful college players that this is a team of the future and it is time to come on board.

This is the moment where the country realizes that UConn is not just a basketball school anymore.

Saturday at 2 p.m. will be one more time for Howard to be honored by his teammates. It will be a chance for these Huskies to give this season its proper send-off while starting a new chapter in its history.

One that its players, coaches and fans will be a successful and exciting one.
