Fermi High is getting a long-awaited cleanup.
Gov. M. Jodi Rell told the Hartford Courant that the State Bond Commission will allocate $1.1 million for soil remediation at Enrico Fermi High School in Enfield next month.
The money is the second installment in a reimbursement plan to cover the soil remediation at Fermi's athletic fields. The town discovered about five years ago that the soil at Fermi was contaminated with pesticides.
"We are keeping our commitment and our promise to Enfield," Rell said in front of the school on Thursday.
"This was a total team effort between the state and the town of Enfield," Mayor Scott Kaupin said. "[The $1.1 million] makes Enfield a healthier place financially."
The money will go to the town's fund balance, and the town council will have to decide how to use it.
