1 Dead in Durham Crash

Route 17 is closed as police investigate.

One person is dead after an SUV rolled over on Route 17 in Durham early Tuesday morning. 

Robert Southwick, 42, of Middletown, was driving his 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche northbound on Route 17 in Durham, about two-tenths of a mile couth of Coe Road, when he crossed into the oncoming lane and veered off the road, state police said. His car hit the embankment, rolled over and then struck a tree before re-entering the roadway, landing on hits room and sliding across the road befor crashing into the metal guardrail, according to state police.

That happened at about 12:18 a.m. near 853 New Haven Road (Route 17).

Southwick died in the crash.

He wasn't wearing a seatbelt, but his airbag deployed.

The road was closed while police investigated, but it reopened just after 5:30 a.m.

The cause of the crash is unknown.

Southwick's car was towed from the scene.
