A man is dead after exchanging gunfire with police after trying to carjack several cars and leading police on a chase that spanned from Norwich to Windham on Wednesday afternoon.

Norwich police said they were responding to reports of a possible break-in and the person fled and shot at officers.

It’s not clear how long the pursuit lasted, but it started shortly before 11 a.m. and police said the driver attempted to carjack several vehicles and was shooting at civilians.

Part of the chase was on Interstate 395 and it ended in Willimantic after officers used stop sticks, forcing the vehicle to stop.

During the gun battle, he was shot at least once in the abdomen, police said.

The suspect has been identified as 39-year-old Kyron Marcell Sands of Hartford.

No officers or civilians were injured, according to state police.
