There were some tense moments for police in Middlebury over the weekend after a resident spotted a suspicious package.
Chris McGuire called police around 11:30 am. on Sunday after he saw a green box sitting on top of a wooden bridge on a trail surrounding Lake Elise off Long Meadow Road Extension.
When police arrived, they realized that the package was a military green ammunition can and Middlebury police called in the State Police bomb squad.
A bomb-sniffing dog could not be used, however, because the possibility of gunpowder in the ammo cans might lead dogs to give false alerts.
So, playing on the side of caution, a bomb robot was brought to the scene and part of the walking path was closed to pedestrian traffic.
The robot X-rayed the can and it was determined that the only thing inside was a scavenger hunt puzzle. Police said the puzzles aren't uncommon, but they're usually found in plastic containers, not ammunition cans.
