A 16-year-old boy who was shot in New Haven on Wednesday night outside a convenience store at George and Day streets has died.
The teen, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at 9 a.m. on Thursday, officials said. He was an organ donor and had been on life support early Thursday morning.
The teen was shot at least once in the neck at 9:19 p.m. when a fight broke out involving several other youths, police said. Officials said he was involved in the fight and was struck in the crossfire when two other people pulled guns and started firing at one another.
Witnesses reported hearing several gunshots fired and said the teen was severely beaten, got up and tried to run, but the other people chased him down the street and shot him. As on Thursday afternoon, police said that was not correct.
The teen’s uncle spoke to NBC Connecticut on Thursday morning and said he wanted to make it clear that his nephew is not involved in a gang and was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Police are not saying whether the shooting was gang-related.
The major crimes unit is working on the case.
