328 State Employees Receive Layoff Notices

The highest number go to correctional officers.

Layoff notices have gone out to 328 state employees and the highest number went to correctional workers. State police are also likely to be affected.

Gov. Dannel Malloy’s administration released the numbers on Wednesday morning and most of the notices went to the state Department of Corrections, where 222 received notices, including 191 correctional officers.

The governor's office did not have provide the number of people from state police likely to be affected. If the commissioner can cut enough money from the budget to avoid layoffs, he is free to do so, but the Malloy administration said it is unlikely that he will find enough savings to do so.

Malloy said 6,500 people will need to be laid off throughout state government after unions rejected the deal last month that would have cut $1.6 billion from the budget.

Fourteen notices went out to the Department of Construction Services, one went to the Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, 89 went to the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services and one went to the Office of Policy and Management.

Malloy has given unions until September to come up with their own cost savings plan.

Here is a link to the breakdown.
