Tim Stewart to Run for Open Senate Seat

New Britain Mayor Timothy Stewart will be seeking a new job.

The long-term Republican said he will run for the State Senate seat being vacated by Donald DeFronzo, who  Gov. Dan Malloy recently appointed to be Connecticut’s new commissioner of the Department of Administrative Services.

Stewart told NBC Connecticut that he plans to make the announcement within the next few days,

Despite running for office in a largely Democratic city, Stewart was able to win three terms as mayor.

He was re-elected in November of 2009, but indicated at that point that it would most likely be his last race for mayor.

DeFronzo, a Democrat, is one of two state senators accepting jobs in the Malloy administration.

Andrew McDonald was appointed general counsel for Malloy.

The special election is expected to be held sometime in March.
