State Auctions Off $500K in Clunkers

The state auctioned off many vehicles to save bucks Saturday

The state government closed the budget gap by $510,000 over the weekend by parting with its surplus state-owned cars.

The government auctioned off hundreds of vehicles Saturday. After 529 bids, the state sold 223 vehicles, the Hartford Courant reports. The cars ranged from silver SUVs and sporty cars to big blue buses. The biggest bid was for a Ford E-350 Wheel Chair Bus that went for $8,200, the Courant reports.

Gov. M. Jodi Rell said last week she hoped cutting the fleet by 20 percent and put $1 million back into government coffers. Hundreds had already been sold, so the state exceeded $1 million, the newspaper reports.
