Events: Honoring MLK, from Services to Activism

Across the state, people will be honoring the memory and works of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Ansonia: Greater Evangel Temple Church Of God In Christ is holding a celebration of King at noon. 

Bridgeport: University of Bridgeport is honoring King’s memory with a day of service.  In the Student Center Social Room, students are assembling care packages for children in Africa, knitting caps for chemotherapy patients, painting peace murals, making dog biscuits for rescue dogs and sorting food and clothing at community centers. At 1:30 p.m., there will be a Field of Hope MLK Day Indoor Carnival held by Service for Peace in the Wheeler Recreation Center, 84 Iranistan Ave.

Bridgeport: Bridgeport's Black Pride is honoring King at Mount Aery Baptist Church, 73 Frank St., according to the News Times. It started at 8:30 a.m.

Cromwell: The Martin Luther King Jr. Day Breakfast and Food Drive started at the Crowne Plaza Cromwell 8 a.m. Breakfast attendees will make King's holiday a day of activism by both advancing the education of the Foundation's scholarship recipients, who will be honored at the event, and providing much needed food for the hungry.

Danbury: Mt. Pleasant AME Zion Church, 71 Rowan St., will hold a celebration from 3 to 5 p.m., where Dr. Jefferson Wiggins and Marian Steward will be honored.

Hartford: Hope Point Charities will commemorate King through a ceremony at Central Baptist Church, 457 Main St. at 10 a.m.

Hartford: King will be honored at the State Capitol with a Liberty Bell celebration event at 11 a.m. in the Hall of Flags.

Hartford: The Inter Ministerial Alliance will hold a celebration of King’s life at Hopewell Baptist Church, 67 Rockville St., at noon.

New Haven: The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection will host a two-day family festival honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy of environmental and social justice, from
10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History, 170 Whitney Ave.,

New London: In New London, religious leaders will host the annual walk in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. It starts at 10 a.m. at City Hall and continues up State Street past the library and courthouse to Huntington Street, according to the Day of New London. It ends at Shiloh Baptist Church on Garvin Street, with a memorial service.

Norwalk: U.S. Rep. Jim Himes will be the keynote speaker at the Norwalk Public Schools annual motivational MLK Day event, promoting activism and education, at West Rocks Middle School, 81 West Rocks Road. Event runs from 10:30 a.m. - 11:30 a.m.

Stamford: The annual "The Dream in Our Time" celebration follows the annual Stamford MLK Day March. The rally starts at Bethel AME Church, 150 Fairfield Ave., Stamford at 10:30 a.m. Followed by a program at Yerwood Center, 90 Fairfield Ave., at noon, where Congressman Jim Hines will speak.

Waterbury: The Youth Health Service Corps celebrates a Day of Service, where residents will hand out lunches and winter items for the homeless at Waterbury at Waterbury Baptist Ministries, 222 West Main St.

Waterbury: At 11 a.m.,  U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy will speak at the Waterbury Churches Martin Luther King Jr. services, at Mount Olive AME Zion, 92-100 Pearl St.

West Hartford: West Hartford will hold the 14th annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life on in the West Hartford town hall auditorium, 50 South Main St., from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

West Hartford: University of Hartford will hold the 4th annual Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. observance from 11 a.m. to noon at Lincoln Theatre.
