Evacuation issued for part of Bozrah, Norwich after partial dam failure

NBC Universal, Inc.

An evacuation has been issued in part of Bozrah and part of Norwich after a partial dam break on Wednesday morning.

Norwich's city manager has determined that the Yantic River Flood Zone must be evacuated to "protect the life and safety of residents" in the area along the Yantic River from the Bozrah line to the Uncas Falls in Downtown Norwich.

Kelly Middle School is available as an Emergency Shelter and the city said the Red Cross is already at the school and will be able to manage several hundred residents.

Residents who are evacuating from Yantic are advised that they might be displaced from their residences and businesses for several days.

The state Department of Emergency Management & Homeland Security said that it has issued a wireless emergency alert as a precaution at the request of the town for the evacuation of Stockhouse Road in Bozrah due to the incident at the Fitchville Pond Dam.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning.

And Norwich Public Utilities has taken its Bean Hill Substation offline “to avoid potentially catastrophic damage” to the infrastructure.

That has caused around 5,000 power outages.
