A&P to Lay Off 416

More than 416 employees will lose their jobs when four A&P supermarkets in Connecticut close on Nov. 1.

Waldbaum’s, which is affiliated with A&P, will be laying off 195.

On Sept. 8, the supermarket chain notified the state Department of Labor that it will be laying off people at the stores in Middletown, Branford, Old Lyme and Mystic. The Waldbaum’s store in West Hartford is also affected.

In Middletown, 77 workers will be affected, in Branford, 156 workers will be affected, in Old Lyme, 88 workers will be affected and 95 workers will be affected in Mystic. The list is posted on the state Department of Labor Web site.

Big Y has bought seven A&P stores in the state and the Wauldbaum’s, according to MassLive. The stores included in this round of layoffs will close on Nov. 1. Employees’ last day of employment is listed at Nov. 8.

An official from the state Department of Labor said the employees are most likely being paid that one additional week.
