2 Charged in Monroe Convenience Store Robbery

Monroe police have made two arrests in a robbery at a convenience store on Sept. 6.

Police responded to the Buck Stop gas station and convenience store at 12:33 a.m. on Sept. 6 to investigate a robbery and the night manager said the robbery had happened around 20 minutes earlier.

A man wearing dark pants, a black hooded sweatshirt and a face mask had put a plastic bag on the counter, implied he had a weapon, and told the night manager to fill it with cash, police said.

When the manager placed cash from the register into the plastic bag, the man ran off with the money, police said.

After a two-month investigation, police identified Christopher Basso, 25, of Newtown, and Wesley Steinfeld, 29, of Newtown, as the suspects.

Steinfeld is suspected of committing the robbery and Basso is accused of orchestrating it and driving the getaway car, police said.

Basso was arrested at his home on Nov. 5 and Steinfeld turned himself in at the Monroe Police Department on Tuesday after learning there was a warrant for his arrest, police said.

Steinfeld was not able to post $250,000 bond and will be arraigned in Bridgeport, police said.

He has been charged with first-degree robbery, third-degree larceny and first-degree threatening.

Basso was charged with first-degree robbery, third-degree larceny, first-degree conspiracy to commit robbery and third-degree conspiracy to commit larceny.

Police do not expect to make more arrests in the case.
