Father Killed After Altercation Involving Sons in Waterbury

Waterbury police are investigating their first homicide of the year.

Kareem Morey, 38, of Waterbury, was shot shortly after 10:30 p.m. Friday night, near an apartment building at the corner of Chestnut Avenue and Johnson Street.

A spokesman for the Waterbury Police Department said Morey's two sons, ages 19 and 21, were involved in an dispute with a group of men earlier Friday night.

Later that evening, Morey and his two sons got involved in a second altercation with the same group of men and that's when Morey was shot.

Investigators say they know the details of the argument but are not releasing that information.

Morey was rushed to St. Mary's Hospital where he died from a single gunshot wound to his chest.

Shawn Gatton, who lives across the street from where it happened, says he was home at the time but didn't hear anything about it until his neighbor told him the next day. He says it's not the first time shots have been fired in the area.

"It's been getting a little crazy lately around here," said Gatton. "There have been a lot of gunshots, and someone actually got shot just a few months back, actually right around the same area here."

Police are still searching for a suspect.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers at 203-755-1234.
