Residents Prepare for Cold Snap

Many students will return to school on Monday after the holiday break and parents will want to make sure they’re bundled up when they head out to wait for the bus.

Thermometers are expected to soon register the coldest air of the season so far.People are getting ready for temperatures to take a tumble.

“I don’t like the cold weather. I’ve enjoyed the warm weather. I’ve enjoyed riding my horse outside,” says Kara Dion of Farmington.

“The cold weather is fine with me. It’s the snow that bothers me a little bit because I work for UPS so the snow is difficult to get the packages delivered,” says Patrick Murphy of Plantsville.

Drivers could run into problems during the bitter blast.

That’s why AAA suggests checking around your car and under the hood.

It warns drivers to look over your battery which can have a tougher time starting in colder temperatures. Also make sure the tire pressure and the fluid levels are okay.

While the cold could make starting cars more difficult, it will help kick off the ski season including at Mt. Southington.

“We lost all of Christmas vacation and all of New Year’s so that’s a big hit for all the ski areas in Connecticut,” says William Palmisano of Mt. Southington.

The snowmaking machines stand ready as do crews.

As soon as the temperature hits the key 28 degrees, they will fire up and hopefully skiers will soon hit the mountain.

“Our target date is actually Tuesday. So hopefully if they can do something tonight and with the weather being cold all day tomorrow, with the snowmaking we have now I believe we’ll be open Tuesday,” says Palmisano.

You can track the temperature and what’s expected to be a biting wind chill on the NBC Connecticut App.
