Bus Driver Charged with Hitting, Killing UConn Student

The shuttle bus driver that fatally hit a 20-year-old UConn student on March 22 was arrested on Friday.

Campus officials say Lukasz Gilewsky, of Newington was driving the shuttle bus that struck and killed David Plamondon, and now faces charges after voluntarily turning himself in on Friday to UConn police. The charges include negligent homicide with a motor vehicle and failure to yield right of way to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

Gilewsky was released on a $10,000 non-surety bond pending his appearance in Rockville Superior Court on July 26.

Plamondon was struck on March 22 while walking across the intersection of Hillside Road and Alumni Drive. Plamondon subsequently died at the scene as a result of the accident.

Plamondon was a native of Westminster, Mass. and an aspiring doctor who was active in a campus singing group and community service programs. He was also a semi-pro baseball player with the Lunenburg Phillies in Massachusetts.
