Coast Guard Cadets Ousted Over Fake Pot

An investigation found 14 cadets at the Coast Guard Academy had used synthetic marijuana.

Fourteen cadets are being tossed from the Coast Guard Academy for using synthetic marijuana.

The cadets are in the process of being dis-enrolled from the military academy in New London, according to a Coast Guard spokesperson.

An investigation was launched by academy officials, and found the 14 cadets used the synthetic substance, which is forbidden at the academy. At least eight others have been implicated or are under investigation as well.

"While we are certainly disappointed with the conduct involved in this incident, these actions are not indicative of the behavior of our Corps of Cadets," said Rear Adm. Sandra Stosz, Academy Superintendent.

The synthetic version mimics the effects of marijuana.

"The use of synthetic marijuana is a troubling issue nationwide. As a military institute, we hold cadets to the highest standards of conduct and go to great lengths to ensure those standards are clearly understood and strictly enforced."

The cadets can appeal their expulsions to Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, D.C.
