Dozens Sent Home After Ammonia Leak in Yantic

More than two dozen employees were evacuated from U.S. Foods in Yantic and sent home after an ammonia leak early Tuesday morning.

Officials from the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said there was an ammonia leak from a compressor used for refrigeration at a food storage warehouse around 1:15 a.m. and the building at 222 Otrobando Ave. was evacuated because of the toxic material.

Around 25 employees who were evacuated were sent home and none were injured.

The sub base Fire Dept Haz-mat team secured the leak and the building was reopened after it was ventilated.
