A Bridgeport woman has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $400,000 from the People’s United Bank branch where she worked, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Maria Rosa Esteves, 40, is accused of misappropriating some 300 cashier’s checks while working as the lead adjuster at a People’s Bank in Bridgeport. She was employed at the bank between 1993 and 2014 and began leading the adjustments department in 2006, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release Friday.
Esteves used the embezzled funds to pay her utility company, homeowner’s insurance company and mortgage providers, according to the release.
She’ll be sentenced Nov. 7 in Hartford and could face up to 30 years in prison. Esteves could also be ordered to pay the bank $1 million in restitution, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said.
