Man Tries to Rob Liquor Store, Steals From Passerby: Cops

West Haven police are searching for the young man who they say tried to rob a liquor store, then stole cash and a cellphone from a passerby on Saturday.

According to police, a light-skinned black or Hispanic male between 17 and 20 years old entered Ye Old Liquor Shoppe at 174 Main Street in West Haven around 8:45 p.m. Saturday.

The suspect pointed a black handgun at the clerk and demanded money, but ended up fleeing the store without taking anything. A few minutes later, the same suspect robbed a man walking the area of Third Avenue and Treadwell Street, stealing cash and a cellphone, police said.

No one was injured during either incident.

Police said the suspect has a thin build and stands around 5 feet 8 inches tall. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black jeans and work boots.
