More than 40 Guns Collected During Buy-Back Event in New Haven

More than 40 guns are off the streets after a gun buy-back event in New Haven on Saturday hosted by the New Haven Police Department, Yale New Haven's Children's Hospital, the Injury Free Coalition for Kids and the Newtown Alliance.

Officers say 45 operable firearms and three that could have been made operable were turned in, including an assault-type weapon.

According to police, the guns will be destroyed so they will never be able to fall into the wrong hands.

Members of the police's safety team also gave out free gun locks and provided gun safety information to anyone who wanted it.

More than 600 guns have been taken in during buy-back events within the last five years, police say.

Another gun buy-back event is scheduled for December.
