New Haven Official Named Connecticut Banking Commissioner

Gov. Dannel Malloy has appointed New Haven Alderman and banker Jorge Perez as the state's next banking commissioner.

On Friday, Malloy announced his choice of Perez, who is a vice president at Liberty Bank and president of the New Haven Board of Aldermen.

“Jorge has many years of service in the banking community, in addition to the years of service he has provided to his home community in New Haven,” Malloy said in a statement. “The Department of Banking serves a critical service to the people of Connecticut, ensuring that consumers can have confidence in financial institutions and receive the protections to which they are entitled. I look forward to having Jorge serve in this capacity on behalf of the state and continue the important work of this agency.”

Perez served on the Board of Aldermen for the City of New Haven since 1987, representing the 5th ward in the Hill neighborhood, and currently serves as the board’s president.

“I offer heartfelt congratulations to Board of Alders President Jorge Perez, an accomplished, dedicated public servant, on his nomination by Governor Malloy to be Connecticut’s new banks commissioner,” New Haven Mayor Toni Harp said in a statement. “I believe his financial acumen will serve the state Department of Banking and Connecticut residents well, just as it has been to the longstanding benefit of New Haven and its residents.”

The Department of Banking is responsible for protecting users of financial services from unlawful or improper practices. It also assures the safety and soundness of state-chartered banks and credit unions.

“I am humbled and honored for the opportunity to be appointed as the next banking commissioner of this great state,” Perez said in a statement. “I’m thankful and grateful to Governor Malloy for his confidence and look forward to working with the staff to continue serving the residents and the financial services industry in Connecticut.”

The appointment requires legislative confirmation. Perez is set to take the job March 13, succeeding Howard Pitkin who retired in January.
