New London Housing Director Accuses City, Board of Discrimination

The executive director of the New London Housing Authority has filed a complaint with a state agency citing harassment, discrimination and retaliation against her.

NBC Connecticut obtained a copy of the complaint where Sue Shontell also said she believes part of the reason is because she is gay.

The State of Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities confirmed the complaint is pending an investigation, but could not give more information.

In the complaint Shontell singles out one board member who she says threatened her and degraded her in front of staff. Shontell claims that she went to New London Mayor Michael Passero about it, but nothing was done to stop it.

Passero declined to comment on the complaint.

This comes at a time where tension is high between Shontell and the Housing Authority Board of Commissioners over the maintenance and future of the Thames River Apartments, where living conditions have been deemed deplorable.
