Newest State Representative Sworn In

The newest member of the Connecticut House of Representatives has been sworn into office.

Shortly before Wednesday's House session, Republican Tami Zawistowski took the oath, administered by Secretary of the State Denise Merrill. She won last week's special election for the 61st Assembly District, which includes East Granby, Suffield and a part of Windsor.

Zawistowski is filling the seat previously held by Democratic Rep Elaine O'Brien, who died at the age of 58 on Feb. 21.

House Minority Leader Lawrence Cafero Jr. welcomed his newest member, calling her "a great addition to our chamber family."

Her presence increases the House GOP's minority to 54 members, the most in a decade. Democrats hold 96 seats.
