Officials Warn of Common IRS Phone Call Scams

If the IRS is calling you, hang up.

The IRS would not contact a person by phone, email, text or social media for personal and financial information, according to the agency's website

When the IRS needs to contact anyone, it is done my mail.

Police in Wethersfield said they have already had complaints about the scams.

"This scam has been going on all over the state for several years. This year is no different. Residents should immediately hang up if they receive one of these phone calls," Wethersfield Police's police chief James Cetran said.

Some callers tell people there is a problem with taxes and local authorities will seek an arrest. Deputy Chief Scott. P. Custer of South Windsor Police also tells people to just hang up the phone because local police can't arrest people for federal tax cases.

Police said some victims were instructed to send money by either Western Union or Green Dot. 

The IRS has posted ways to stay safe from being scammed.
