Cleanup Begins After Hermine's Wind Gusts Left Old Saybrook in the Dark

Power is back on in Old Saybrook after wind gusts from what was left of Tropical Storm Hermine began to pick up on Monday, but there is a bit of cleaning up left to do after those winds brought down trees, branches and power lines.

College Street was one street that was closed after wires came crashing down and caused a few small fires following a transformer exploding, according to Old Saybrook fire officials.

Owen Gade said there was a beautiful start to the night, then the winds started.

“Very odd. It was beautiful, nice, You could see the stars last night and then just gusting winds,” he said.

But it felt like an earthquake when the tree came down.

“I was downstairs and I heard all these bricks and everything shaking and coming down the chimney,” he said.

Fortunately, no one was hurt.

“That tree could have gone right through the roof and landed on them. So very thankful,” Gade said.

Power knocked out power to around 180 customers in Old Saybrook on Monday.

"The lights started flickering on and off," Melissa Panek, of Old Saybrook, said on Monday. "I looked out my window and saw a huge explosion."

Houses in the neighborhood were left with no lights and even players at a mini golf course near by were left in the dark.

"It's kind of fun," Ayden Riendeau, 7, of Manchester, said.

Riendeau and her parents had the course all to themselves on Monday night after the electricity cut out.

"It just went right off," Craig Riendeau, Ayden's father, said.
