Route 83 Reopens in Vernon

Route 83 in Vernon was closed for hours after a driver plowed his car into a utility pole after suffering what police believe was a drug overdose.

According to police, Luke Edwards, 21 of Madison, lost control of his 2006 Jeep around 3 a.m. on Route 83 near Dobson Road.

Edwards’ car struck the utility pole before rolling over into the woods.

When paramedics arrived, Edwards, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was unconscious.

Paramedics administered Narcan and he regained conscious.

"The male was treated by officers," said Lt. William Meier. "When EMS arrived the male was given Narcan and subsequently regained consciousness, walking around. As a precaution, he was brought to Hartford Hospital by LifeStar.

Edwards was charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain lane. He was released on a $500 non-surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Rockville Court on Monday, July 25.

The road was closed for hours while crews worked to replace the pole and damaged wires. Police said one lane in each direction was opened around 1:50 p.m. for traffic to pass through the area.
