Students Stunned by Coach Calhoun's Leave

As word started to spread on the Storrs campus Tuesday night of Coach Jim Calhoun's medical leave, students were stunned.

"Oh! Oh my!" said Senior Yona Spiegel.  "Oh my God! Really? Are you lying to me?" said Sophomore Bill Beliveau.  "I was shocked. I couldn't believe Jim's not going to be around for awhile. I'm kind of curious to what it is exactly." said Sophomore Greg Grosso.

The university will only say Coach Calhoun's issue is temporary and not related to any previous health problems.  The Hall of Fame coach was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003 and also has had two bouts with skin cancer.

"I am worried for him. I don't know what's wrong and I'm worried for the team cause they had a rough couple of games this winter break," said Sophomore Aaron Roscoe.

This past weekend's loss to Michigan was the Huskies' third straight and fans are worried about what Coach Calhoun's absence will mean for the team.

"I get nervous because he's an amazing coach and the team is already, not struggling, but not doing so hot," said Sophomore Rachel Poutre.  "That's rough. Men's basketball hasn't been doing as well as they want to be anyways, so with him out of the picture, it's a hard chance to pick it back up again," said Freshman Alex Gale.

"There's two things that can happen. They can fall apart because of this or they could show how tough they really are and come together and start winning for him," Sophomore Justin Simone.
